18th C Lignum Vitae Mortar

18th C Lignum Vitae Mortar

  • This is a very early mortar, probably dating from the mid to late 1700s.

It is made of lignum vitae, the heaviest and densist of all woods.  It was imported in the early days of our settlements from the Caribbean.

This one has evidence of old chipped in designs around the outside, with wear around the lip.

    It is very heavy but quite a nice size: 5 3/4" x 5 3/4"

A hole was cut into the very bottom and the resulting plug is now removable. (Purpose??)
