This is a nice Norfolk latch in working order.  It is likely American - the name refers to the English style, widely made in this country.

Hand forged.  Not that the handle has a stamped curved piece in the middle.

Large thumb piece which bends downward at the back. 

8" long, thumb piece is 5 1/4" long.

Found in Massachusetts and dating from the 1820-30s.
