19th C Wall Box in Early Red

  • This is an early candle box, which is a wall box - to keep the candles away from mice.

    Long and narrow with a nicely carved back with graceful swoops up to the carrying and hanging handle.

    Old dark red milk paint, original.

    Square nail construction with a few reinforcing nails.

    3/4" base extends on 3 sides - not the back - so that it will hang tightly.

    16 1/2" x 5" deep, x 4 3/4" tall, 8" to the top of the handle.

    Found in New Hampshire and dating from the mid 1800s.
