Early, Primitive, Signed Box

Early, Primitive, Signed Box

  • This is a very unusual, early, primitive box in great grain painting in ochre over yellow, vibrant on all sides.

The owner carved his name, somewhat unevenly, on the top, " G. Mills".

The original hinges were replaced a long time ago with leather hinges.

Made of pine using tiny brads.

    Age crack across the top.

There are 3 nails in the top which fit into slots on the front, worn down with usage wear.

Lined with wallpaper.  One leather strap remains to hold it open. The other one is in place but not attached.

    11" x 6" x 6"

Found in Massachusetts and dating from the mid 1800s.
